Waste Free Oceans and Partners Unite for Large-Scale Cleanup in Roatán, Honduras

Roatán, Honduras  – Waste Free Oceans (WFO), in collaboration with Roatán Marine Park (RMP), Bay Islands Conservation (BICA), and other local partners, is set to lead a large-scale cleanup in Roatán, Islas de la Bahía, on March 14, 2025, in honor of Mesoamerican Reef Day. This significant initiative aims to tackle marine pollution, protect local biodiversity, and engage communities in sustainable waste management practices.

The Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, is a vital ecosystem that supports marine life and coastal communities. However, increasing pollution, particularly plastic waste, threatens its health and sustainability. Through this cleanup, WFO and its partners will work together to remove waste from the island’s shores and waters, raising awareness about the importance of ocean conservation.

“We are thrilled to bring together such dedicated partners for this crucial cleanup effort,” said [Spokesperson’s Name], [Title] at Waste Free Oceans. “By combining resources and expertise, we can make a real impact on the preservation of this invaluable marine ecosystem.”

The cleanup will not only focus on waste removal but also on fostering long-term solutions by promoting circular economy practices. Recyclable materials collected during the event will be processed and reintegrated into the production cycle, reducing waste accumulation in the region. Additionally, this initiative aims to establish a stable, long-term project in Roatán, ensuring continuous efforts to protect and restore the marine environment.

The activity will take place in three different locations on the same day: Crowfish Rock (mangrove area), Sandy Bay (beach), and West End (beach and underwater cleanup at the reefs). These strategic locations were selected to address waste pollution in diverse ecosystems, from mangroves to beaches and coral reefs.

Joining this initiative are diving clubs, Roatan’s community, schools, the municipality, waste pickers associations, and plastic artisans, who will contribute to the effort through their expertise and dedication to environmental conservation.

WFO and its partners invite volunteers, local businesses, and government representatives to join the initiative and be part of the movement for a cleaner, healthier ocean.
