PRESS RELEASE
April 4 2023
On Saturday 18th of March, Waste Free Oceans and its partners NAK Limited, The Recycler and BlueCourses organized in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a clean-up in Mbezi Beach. This action was organized in the framework of the Global Recycling Day, which seeks to raise awareness of the consequences of pollution and to promote the use of recycled material. It is also a continuation of the WFO Africa Roadshow, which consists in a series of clean-ups and educational programs to alert on the impact of plastic pollution.
90 volunteers gathered on Saturday morning at the Mbezi Beach, equipped with waste pickers and bin bags, to restore the beach to its natural beauty. Local fishermen also made use of the WFO waste-catching trawl to catch floating waste in the ocean. This simple technology enables local communities to participate in the restoration of natural environments and eliminate the waste found on their shorelines. We hope to send a bigger trawl in the coming months to promote waste collection schemes in the region of Dar es Salaam.

The collected waste was then transported to a local recycling plant, operated by our partners The Recycler. The clean-up was organized in partnership with NAK
Limited and Rotary Club Dar es Salaam. NAK provides services such as professional health and safety or environmental management. They collaborate with The Recycler, offering professional waste management and recycling solutions in Tanzania. Moreover, BlueCourses financed a large share of this operation, enabling us to make a significant impact on the Mbezi beach.
With these actions, we hope to bring to the forefront the urgency of tackling plastic waste and promote the use of recycled plastic in society.
